Meet the Vets

The Alex Lewyt Veterinary Medical Center is a modern "state-of-the-art" medical center that is open everyday of the year to care for the animals in our Adoption Center. The Medical Center is across the main parking lot from the Adoption Center. Approximately 7,000 square feet in size, this cutting-edge hospital was opened in 1992 and is dedicated to the memory of Alex Lewyt, the League's first president and chairperson of the board. Inside, a highly trained medical staff provides our needy pets with a full range of medical care, from routine vaccinations to complicated surgeries.

Staffed by over ten full time veterinarians -- as well as more than 80 technicians, volunteers, and administrative personnel -- this full-service hospital provides twenty-four hour care for the over 25,000 pets who are sheltered by the League each year. Each week over 150 animals are hospitalized and over 200 outpatients are seen for examinations and treatment . In addition, 27,000 vaccinations are administered annually to keep our former residents happy and healthy.

A Second Chance At Life

This nationally respected facility includes pet- and owner-friendly examination and waiting rooms, a surgery suite rivaling those in human hospitals, and an Intensive Care Unit providing around-the-clock care to the sickest pets. Puppies and kittens with contagious but curable diseases, many of whom would be automatically destroyed elsewhere, are given state-of-the-art medical care in our Pediatric Isolation Wards. For more serious cases, our Emergency Care Unit is equipped to handle even the worst scenarios; and in our four-bay Surgery Unit, complex lifesaving operations are frequently performed.
