  1. Avoid injuries: Stretching, massages, warming up (easy/slow run), cooling down (easy/slow run/walk), ice, rest, ice compression and elevation of sore body parts will go a long way towards not getting injured. Consult with a doctor if you experience shin, knee, ankle, back or hip pain.
  2. Simulate race conditions: Run, race and do your intervals on the road (skip the track).
  3. Take walk breaks to avoid fatigue and injury. Use a run-walk strategy to conserve energy, cool down and help oxygen and blood flow to your muscles.
  4. Avoid over-heating when the temperature rises. Slow down or walk when the temperature increases to feel better and conserve energy.
  5. Run with others to add a social and fun element. Running with faster runners will help increase your speed and keep you interested in the sport. Running races (5K, 10K and 1/2 marathons) will give you valuable race experience before your first marathon.
  6. Pace yourself by not going out too fast. Slow down at the beginning to give your body a chance to warm up. You can pick up the pace later in the run.
  7. Proper running shoes are vital. Check with knowledgeable running shoe experts to find the properly fitted shoe. Marathon runners have a minimum of two to three sets of running shoes (two for practice and one ready to go on race day).
  8. Eating a well balanced diet is essential. Check with www.eatright.org for more information on nutrition.
  9. Having fun while running is very important. Enjoy your runs by running on different days, routes, surfaces, locations and with different people.
  10. Consult running websites such as runnersworld.com and nyrr.org for more tips, tricks and information.
