Won’t You Foster Me?

Spikey and North Shore Animal League America would like to send all of you a very special thank you for your support and good wishes. We know that people like you who care about the welfare of animals like Spikey make the world a better place for people and pets; and we are thankful to have you on our team.

We would like to tell you the latest on Spikey’s condition and our efforts to help him heal. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like Spikey will be able to go for heart surgery at this time. After speaking with specialists, we were informed that currently, the survival rate on the particular surgery that Spikey needs is 0%. The operation is still in the experimental stages, and there has been no success thus far with it. We do not want to lose Spikey any earlier than we have to and are not willing to gamble with his life. In addition, any heart surgery can not be performed until Spikey is at least one year old. For now, Spikey’s condition is being treated as best it can with medication three times a day, 6-8 hours apart.

Though this is certainly discouraging information, North Shore Animal League America is not willing to give up. We are still speaking with other specialists and looking for other avenues. We don’t want to lose our puppy. In the meantime, we are working on making every day a great day for Spikey. Surrounded by love and attention, he gets plenty of treats, enjoys regular walks and indulges in plenty of supervised, mild playtime. Spikey doesn’t realize he is sick and certainly doesn’t act sick, so regular supervision to make sure he stays calm is necessary.

The best we can do for Spikey at the moment is make him happy and comfortable and to find him a loving home with a local foster family. Spikey’s time is limited, and though he is surrounded by love in our shelter, we would prefer for his remaining time to be in the loving arms of a real family. As a special needs foster pet, all Spikey’s medical costs would be fully covered, and he would need to be seen monthly for checkups, so he needs to stay local.

We are so grateful for every moment we have with Spikey and know you will be too. We would love if he could start the New Year in his very home with a loving, caring and adoring family. Spikey’s medical needs and costs are taken care of by the League. We just need YOU to provide the loving family.

If you have love in your heart and room in your home for a darling puppy with special needs, we urge you to consider fostering our special boy. The rewards will be infinite.
