North Shore Animal League America takes every opportunity to improve the lives of our resident pets. We want their time spent in our shelter to be as pleasant as possible, and we also want it to be a learning and loving experience.

To help some of our dogs who have special behavioral needs or those that have been in our care longer than others, we have created the Buddy Program. In the Buddy Program, associates and managers are signed up with their canine buddies to help the dogs on various issues such as housebreaking, socializing, and manners or even just to give them extra exercise, and try to bond emotionally with each and every one of them. Not only does this make the dog a more adoptable pet, it keeps them happy and safe during their stay in our care. While we love all of our dogs equally, some do require a little extra love and attention than others.

The Buddy Program is designed to help dogs face their specific challenges and to get them ready for adoption. Human buddies also buy toys, bones, beds and treats for their four-legged pals. It is a wonderful relationship. When the dog is adopted, the human buddy is assigned to another dog.

The human buddies are wonderful; they take the time and make the effort to get to know a dog that may have a more challenging time being adopted. The human buddy really gets to know another side of the dog – one that helps potential adopters decide if that dog is the right pet for them.
