The Pets of Hurricane Katrina – Then & Now...
2005 - Hurricane Katrina Devastates the Nation:
When Hurricane Katrina devastated the nation in 2005, North Shore Animal League America was one of the first rescue groups to respond. We combed the flooded streets and overflowing shelters collecting as many homeless animals as possible, administered on-site medical care, supplied food, water and shelter and air-lifted them to the safety of our Port Washington headquarters. Once home, we gave them further medical and behavioral testing, evaluation and treatment, made tenacious efforts to find their existing owners and found homes for those who were unaccounted for.
2006 - North Shore Animal League America Holds a Vigil for Katrina Victims:
On the one-year anniversary of the infamous storm, North Shore Animal League America held a vigil in remembrance of the pets lost and in celebration of those saved. We planted a Dogwood tree on our premises which still stands today. This ceremonial tree represented the lives of those lost and saved in the storm. We called this tree the Hurricane Katrina Pet Remembrance Tree.
2007 - North Shore Animal League America Invites You to Celebrate Your Love for Your Pets:
Now, on the two-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, we are reminded not of the devastation – but of the triumph of the collective efforts of the League and all her dedicated supporters. Together, we accomplished the unthinkable. To date, we have now rescued 1,607 animals, reunited 21 with their owners and adopted 1,212 into loving homes - and we continue to save lives every day. This tree proves that if something is cared for and nourished, it will bloom. What once represented all of the Katrina pets, now symbolizes the invaluable lives of all our animals, and our steadfast mission to protect each and every one of them. It represents all of our pets and all of your pets – living and gone – and the love we gave that made them blossom. This is the Tree of Love.
