Hurricane Charlie Before: When Golden Labrador mix, Hurricane Charlie, came to us as part of the Hurricane Katrina rescue, it was apparent that he had been through an ordeal – even before the storm. Charlie had heartworms and an upper respiratory infection; but even worse, Charlie was in the late stages of kidney disease which requires daily medication and special food. He also had some behavioral hurdles to overcome. Charlie seemed fearful of men and possessive of his food. We suspected possible physical abuse in Charlie’s past, as fear and worry are common indicators. Charlie had a difficult life thus far, and it was no wonder that he would need some behavioral rehabilitation; but all that was about to change.

Hurricane Charlie After: Hurricane Charlie was in our care for more than a year before a family enquired about him. They fell in love with his poignant story, and they fell in love with him. Hurricane Charlie was about to start a new journey – all the way to California. Now lovingly known as Charlie Bear, this lucky dog spends his days strolling on the beach, playing in the sand and being adored by his new family. Thanks to the patience and loving determination of his family, Charlie Bear is truly a changed dog. He finally realizes that his wonderful life is real and will not be snatched away from him at any moment. From love, his behavioral issues are subsiding, he is learning to trust again and he is growing a little more confident each day.
