Teddy Before: Gorgeous Teddy, a Golden Retriever Chow Chow mix, had been wandering the dangerous and diseased streets in the wake of Hurricane Katrina before he was finally rescued. When Teddy was medically evaluated, it was discovered that he had various conditions including dermatitis, an upper respiratory infection, and parasites. In addition, Teddy’s teeth had been slightly worn down suggesting that he had been eating rocks to make up for the lack of food, and doing what needed to be done to survive. Poor Teddy had been battling famine and depression. With the horrific conditions that he had to endure, none of these illnesses came as a surprise, and fortunately, all of them were treatable. Like all the Katrina animals, Teddy needed a little extra TLC, and got it in abundance by one particular League volunteer who knew from the moment she met him that they were meant to be.
Teddy After: Teddy was in the League’s care for only one month – just long enough to be clear of any contagious conditions – before his special volunteer took him to his new home. At first, Teddy seemed a little lost and depressed. But that quickly faded and soon after, he became attached to and possessive of his family. He guarded them. He needed to learn that he was safe and that no one was going to take them away from him. Eventually, however, Teddy settled in and grew confident that he was in his forever home. Now about five years old, Teddy has two homes – his owner’s home and her mother’s house, where he alternates visits. He has many doggie and human friends and is adored by everyone. He is very fortunate and has two and three of everything – doggie beds, toys, and bowls – and one of his favorite activities is going to the beach. We don’t know if Teddy thinks about his past, the hurricane or his old life; but we do know that Teddy loves his current life. He brings infinite happiness to his family, and they adore him so much that they can only surmise that all of it – working at the League, the storm and the rescue that brought them together – must have been fate.
