Read Gracie’s Full Story.

Gracie, a young pit bull, was maliciously thrown from a four-story rooftop in Brooklyn, New York, but miraculously survived with only a broken leg and chest bruises. Immediately following the horrific incident, Gracie's owner was arrested and an animal cruelty investigation commenced. Brooklyn Animal Care and Control gave us a call and we immediately picked her up and took her into our care.

And after all that poor Gracie had been through, she still came to us, tail wagging, giving kisses and happy as any other young dog. We were ready to do whatever it took, for however long, to get Gracie all fixed up, happy and healthy. She needed to stay with us until all her wounds healed and until the D.A. concluded the animal cruelty investigation. Afterward we would work tirelessly to find her the loving home she deserved.

During her stay here at the League, she captured the hearts of all whom she encountered - and even of those she'd never met. Gracie's tragic story touched so many, inspiring public interest. Phone calls, donations, and inquiries poured in. Gracie was featured in several articles and became somewhat of an icon at North Shore Animal League America.

To our relief and delight, on December 31, 2006, Gracie was adopted from the League and started the new year in a new home, with a new family. Gracie has a new mom, dad and sister to love and cherish. To see them all together, excited and happy, exchanging amorous hugs and kisses, we can only surmise that it must have been fate that saved Gracie from that four-story fall.
