Re: Hurricane Katrina Rescue Efforts

We spent a good amount of yesterday in Birmingham, Alabama loading up supplies and medication for the animals back in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

On this trip we were accompanied by Jacque Meyers, Executive Director of the Greater Birmingham Humane Society, as well as Marty, their clinic supervisor. It was great to have them along and we appreciated their help.

We pulled in at 8 pm just as more animals were arriving. We went right to work feeding and cleaning them. While we were there we met a lieutenant from the Colorado Fire Department who graciously offered us a spot in the military compound for the night. It is set up in the back and called "Camp Forest".

The military compound is housing members of the National Guard and engineer corps as well as firefighters and EMS from across the country. They have told us that they are here to help us and keep us safe. We are very thankful for their presence since we have heard gun shots in the middle of the night.

The extreme heat is taking a toll on the animals and all of the workers and volunteers caring for them. It can make this difficult situation even more frustrating at times.

This morning we were hoping we would be able to transport some of the animals back to Birmingham but they are still being evaluated by the veterinarians.

We are now heading to Tylertown, Mississippi where they desperately need our help. It is a small town with many animals in need and no one to care for them.

We will send pictures as soon as we can find internet access.

Again we can not thank you enough for all of your support.

Debbie, Christina, and Tom
