On Monday, August 24, 2009 at 10 a.m., 150 cast-off puppy mill dogs from a number of Midwest states arrived at North Shore Animal League America after a collaborative rescue with Best Friends Animal Society. The dogs were given a well-deserved and much-needed warm welcome as they pulled into the safety of the Animal League’s campus in Port Washington, NY.

Along with North Shore Animal League America and Best Friends, representatives of various animal rescue groups were also on site to greet the Animal League’s newest residents. In addition, Animal League veterinarians were present to immediately evaluate the dogs’ medical conditions and provide emergency care.

The puppy mill dogs consisted of adults used for breeding and some puppies including various breeds such as Cocker Spaniels, Yorkshire Terriers, Maltese, Poodles, Pomeranians, Shih Tzus, Shetland Sheepdogs, Pugs, and Jack Russell Terriers.

The dogs are currently being medically treated and will be spayed and neutered. Animal League Pet Behaviorists are evaluating the dogs behaviorally to ensure that they will be placed in the most appropriate homes.

Caring for puppy mill dogs can be a long process. Many of these animals have never had any medical care or socialization. Some are ill, most are frightened and all of them need a loving touch. Your support ensures that we can give these dogs the extensive care they need for as long as they need it.

When the dogs are ready, they will be placed for adoption at the Animal League's shelter. Here are just a few of the beautiful puppy mill dogs now in our care.
