Help Me Heal
Animals We Have Helped

Welcome to our Help Me Heal Program

The animals enrolled in the Help Me Heal Program face treatments ranging from minor to serious and some must spend many weeks recovering in the Medical Center. The staff at the Alex Lewyt Veterinary Medical Center provides medical care for the nearly 25,000 dogs, cats, puppies and kittens that enter North Shore Animal League America’s doors each year. Once the animals are healthy, they can be placed in our Adoption Center. At this point, our dedicated staff works extremely hard to find the most perfect, loving, new home for them.

This extraordinary program helps animals receive the surgery they need to live a happy and healthy normal life. The Help Me Heal animals rely on kindhearted donations to assist with their medical issues.

My name is Sage. I'm about 3 years old, and I'm a Mutt-i-gree® - a Greyhound mix. By nature, Greyhounds are contoured, sleek and built for speed. But regardless of how fast I may be, I had nowhere to run to, nor the strength to even try.

As you can see, I have been starved, neglected and abused. My gentle, trusting nature made it easy for someone to mistreat me. I weigh only 33 lbs., when I should weigh about 60 lbs.

I am also fearful and timid when I should be playful, trusting and happy.

I have burns in different areas all over my body. These are not the type of burns you're probably thinking of. These burns are from sitting in my own urine for an extended period of time. Urine is highly acidic and left me with terribly painful burns.

The Animal League believes there is only one assumption they can make from my physical appearance and my fearful state: I was locked in a cage and left to die. I was not given food or water and had to live in my own feces for months.

Given the circumstances, it is no surprise that I am very scared and unsure of whom I can trust.

However I do trust the people at the Animal League. They rescued me from my final days at a municipal shelter. This shelter did not have the space, time or facilities to take care of a dog that needed so much medical and emotional care. Sadly, some shelters have no choice but to euthanize certain animals to make room for other animals that are ready for adoption.

I am so very grateful to be at the Animal League and thank them everyday for saving my life and giving me hope of a bright future.

Right now I'm being treated in the Animal League's Help Me Heal Program. I'm being seen by doctors who are running many tests to help bring me back to health. They are giving me hydration, food, antibiotics and more love than I ever thought possible. I am resting on comforters and doggie beds and I get to go outside for air and exercise several times a day. I have more loving and caring visitors than I can believe. I never knew life could be so filled with love and comfort.

Thank you for supporting the Help Me Heal Program that will make sure that I am as healthy and happy as possible and when I'm ready, they will place me for adoption and ensure that I get the best home possible. I will never be abused or mistreated again.
