...Another Man's Gold

Recently, I became the newest member of North Shore Animal League America's Help Me Heal Program.

My name is Corky. I'm a baby Cocker Spaniel, and if you can believe it, I was found trembling and whimpering in a dumpster that was filled with harmful construction debris like splintered wood, broken glass and rusty nails.

Somebody thought I was garbage and threw me away. I don't know how anyone could mistake a little three month old puppy for trash. I guess they just didn't want me anymore and got rid of me.

It may not seem so, but I got very lucky. A very nice man who was in the process of moving was throwing his garbage into the dumpster when he heard me crying under the trash. He went digging through the debris and was amazed to find me in there - an infant puppy amongst a hill of dirty and dangerous rubbish. He said it was a miracle he heard me, because the very next day, the carting company was going to be removing the dumpster for good and I probably would have died in there.

The caring man swooped me up into his arms and cradled me. When I winced in pain, he saw that my leg was injured. He told me who knew exactly who would help me: North Shore Animal League America and its Help Me Heal Program.

The doctors at the Animal League told me that I was very dehydrated and had a fractured and dislocated femur (leg bone). My eyes were red and irritated and I needed a bath too. But I'm going to get all that taken care of right here at the Animal League. They're going to fix me up as good as new - and then - they're going to find me a nice foster home where I can heal in comfort. Soon - I'll be ready for adoption.

The Help Me Heal Program is very special, and I'm so lucky to be a part of it. It makes sure that hurt animals like me get the care we need for as long as we need it - physical and emotional.

It tells unwanted victims of cruelty like me and so many others that we're not garbage, and we deserve much more.

Thank you for making this life-saving program possible - and for continuing to support it. Most of all, thank you for making so many of us feel wanted and loved. I suppose one man's garbage really is another man's gold.

Give Them The Support They Deserve
