Diego's Story

Hola. I’m Diego. I’m two and a half months old and only two and a half pounds. I may look like your average kitten, but I’m not – I’m special. I have a pretty uncommon condition called megaesophagus. That’s a big word for a little kitten, but the doctors explained to me what it means. They tell me that my food isn’t going down properly. They still have to do more testing, but they think that there is an abnormality in one of my heart vessels that is pinching off my esophagus and preventing food from passing or staying down if it does get through.

More common in dogs, megaesophagus is very rare in cats, making me a unique little kitten. I’m going to need corrective surgery to try and fix this problem so I can eat all my favorite foods and treats. Right now, I’m on a liquid diet and “eat” small amounts several times a day. I actually have to be held upright to eat and have to remain that way for about 30-45 minutes afterwards so that the food can make its way down to my belly. It’s real hard for a zippy little kitty like me to stay in one place for that long!

Corrective megaesophagus surgery is a difficult procedure. I think my chances of recovery are pretty good, but I could use all the help I can get. Luckily, the League has a really great program where little guys like me can get the help we so desperately need.

If you would like to help me get better, you can support North Shore Animal League America’s “Help Me Heal” program. This way, so many sick and injured animals can get the intricate care they need to heal. Isn’t that great?

Please help support this life-saving program, and help save lives.
