I’ve been told that there is no excuse for what has happened to me. I have been neglected, and I have been abused. I have been locked in a cage and abandoned. My mouth was bound and it has left a permanent white mark around my muzzle. I was denied food and water, and quite frankly, I’m very lucky to be alive.

My name is Honey, though I’m sometimes called Honey Bear, and I’m the newest member of the Animal League’s life-saving Help Me Heal Program. At only 1-2 years old, I have seen and survived things that no animal should ever experience. When I came to the Animal League, I was severely underweight. I was starved, dehydrated and extremely weak.

I’m not sure why I was abused. I’m a really good dog. I love people, and anytime someone approaches me, I can’t keep my tail from wagging. Admittedly, I was a little nervous when I first came to the Animal League. Everyone wanted to come up to me and touch me, and I was afraid that they may want to hurt me. But it was just the opposite. Everyone here wants to shower me with love and work hard to make sure I’m ok. Everyone is making the biggest fuss over me, and I love the attention.

The doctors say that I need more tests. I’ve only been here a short time, but I’m not putting on weight as quickly as they would like me to. Because I’m so thin and sickly, I have to take my meals in small doses otherwise I would devour everything in one bite and get tummy upset. I’m also on much-needed nutritional supplements.

You know, there was a time when I didn’t know if I would ever eat again, drink again or feel the loving touch of a human companion. But all that is over now. I’m alive.

Everyday, innocent animals like me are neglected, abused, and abandoned. Not everyone is as lucky as I am to escape such a terrible fate.
