HUMANE EDUCATION
What is Humane Education?
Humane education is about learning to respect and care for the animals in our environment, communities and homes. It is about encouraging kindness, respect and empathy for both humans and animals. Most importantly, humane education strives to establish a sense of responsibility, making the world a better, more humane place.
Why Encourage Humane Education for Children?
North Shore Animal League America believes that learning how to be a responsible pet owner and a friend to animals begins at an early age. Children have a natural curiosity about the world around them and are particularly fascinated by other living creatures making childhood the ideal time to introduce humane education. Humane Education in Schools
The Humane Education Program offers in-school presentations for younger children to learn about basic pet care, animal body language and communication while older children can engage in more advanced issues such as the importance of spaying and neutering, animal safety, reporting animal abuse and finding a career working with animals. Teachers and youth group leaders can also schedule educational tours of our adoption facility so that children can see first-hand some of the work involved in saving tens of thousands of lives each year.
How Can You Help?
The League provides these services at no cost to schools and youth groups because humane education is vital to the well-being of pets and humans alike, ultimately making the world a better place for everyone. Find out how you can help support this vital program.
