Every Pet Is Extremely Important

Not Every Case Is Extreme, But Every Case Is Extremely Important

Every day, North Shore Animal League America is fortunate enough to be able to make a difference in the lives of countless pets. We see an infinite array of scenarios from tragic to wonderful and give the same love, care and efforts to each animal that comes through our doors.

Did you know that every animal in our facility receives extensive care totaling a minimum of almost $700.00 per animal?

Many of our cats, dogs, puppies and kittens come from terrible conditions and neglectful scenarios, but thankfully, even more come from moderate situations like regular homes or other animal shelters. Some have tragic tales of hardship while others are just in need of a good home. Many of our pets come to us extremely ill and others come into our care with slight illnesses such as upper respiratory infections, flea and tick infestations, kennel cough, and conjunctivitis. While many of these minor conditions are relatively easy to treat and heal, the costs incurred are still quite high.

While not every case is extreme, every case is extremely important! Young, old, healthy or ill, every animal in our care gets treated like a special case. It's not surprising that tales of illness and hardship stand out and snatch our attention. But the reality is that most pets in shelters are not extreme cases. Most are homeless animals or strays in need of love, food, shelter and modest medical care. Nonetheless, the same love and devotion goes into every animal that we encounter.

For example, Little Tabitha is a four-month old Australian Cattle Dog mix puppy. This adorable baby was rescued from a kill-shelter that had limited room and modest facilities. Tabitha has an upper respiratory infection, which is being treated with medication. She was also treated for fleas and ticks and given a full medical and behavioral exam. Right now, Tabitha is learning to walk on a leash. She's a bit shy, but full of love. When she sees you, she will roll right onto her back, belly up and wait for a tummy-rub. No one can resist her smooth, silky belly. Other than her mild cold, Tabitha is in good health and will be spayed and placed for adoption as soon as she's ready.

Every animal we encounter here at the League is given the same excellent care, the same respect and the same chance at a happy life. We love and adore each and every one of them and sympathize with their plights – whatever that may be. Though some may need more care than others, we still touch, hold, cuddle, love, and care for every single cat, dog, puppy and kitten we are fortunate enough to help. Helping so many pets at such a high volume isn't easy – but we love to do it, and that's what we're here for.

Please help us continue to love and care for as many pets as possible – to give each one the care and devotion they deserve.
