As the residents of the Gulf Coast region continue the work of restoring their lives and rebuilding their homes an entire year after the devastating blow dealt by Hurricane Katrina, the League holds steadfast to its promise to help the animals there.
Experts predict that it will take years to restore a complete sense of normalcy to the areas hardest hit in August of 2005. Thousands lost their homes and livelihoods and the lingering impact of the destruction continues to affect residents - including helpless dogs and cats.
For the pets that survived the storm with their families or were later reunited, the risk isn't necessarily behind them. Many displaced families now find themselves living in apartment buildings where pets aren't allowed - often times forcing them to bring their pets to local shelters with the hopes that another family will adopt them.
Unfortunately, another factor impacting the well being of homeless pets is the lack of population available to adopt them. Shelters continue to be overcrowded yet there are far fewer families living in the area now and therefore fewer families with the ability to adopt animals desperately in need of a home.
The League's commitment to help the animals impacted by the storm has been unwavering. We continue to assist in the re-homing of pets from Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama with monthly trips to the South. We transport animals back to the League, nurture them, provide any necessary medical attention, and place them up for adoption into loving homes.
In the last twelve months North Shore Animal League America has made thirty-six road trips and conducted two unprecedented airlifts enabling us to rescue 1,327 dogs and cats from the impact areas. More than 500 of those animals were rescued in 2006 alone.
For as long as the need continues, we will be there helping shelters re-home innocent dogs and cats that are still impacted by the lingering affects of Katrina. Our critical rescue work wouldn't be possible without the ongoing support of concerned individuals who recognize the plight of animals in these emergencies.
If you would like to support North Shore Animal League America's mission and ongoing efforts to rescue and find homes for the thousands of animals that are still being affected by Hurricane Katrina. Every little bit helps. Donate today and add your message to the Hurricane Katrina Pet Remembrance Tree.
