Adoption Success Stories

North Shore Animal League America often receives stories and tales from people across the country on the joys of adopting a pet. Below, you will find just some of the stories we receive. If you would like to share your story with the Animal League to publish in a newsletter or online, please email us your story as well as a photo of your Happy Tail.

Dear North Shore Animal League America,

Hi. We recently adopted a female Beagle mix puppy from you on Friday February 6, 2009 at the Southbury, CT Petland from your van.

I wanted to let you know that we are extremely elated with the newest member of our family, who is named Shiloh! We didn't plan on a new addition, but our daughter works for Petland and talked us into taking a ride Friday night. Our daughter is no dummy; she knew full well that once my husband and I saw her, we'd fall in love with her!

I have never been to your Port Washington facility, but from what I am seeing in Shiloh, I can see that you take excellent care of these animals. Shiloh is a very happy-go-lucky little girl. She is very loving with people and other dogs. She's also very smart. We expected accidents all over, but it doesn't seem to be too much of that. We showed her the paper the first night and by yesterday she was seeking out the paper on her own. She loves her new four-legged brother, Shadow, our Shetland Sheepdog. I know by watching them that they are going to be best friends.

In a couple of months I will send more pictures of Shiloh. I suspect that all who take care of the animals would love to see another happy ending (I know I would). Health wise, Shiloh's incision still looks good. I am transitioning her (slowly) to a holistic food and there hasn't been any gastric upset. Everything is as it should be.

I wanted to thank you all for the added joy and love in our family!

Sincerely,

Lenora Thomas

Dear North Shore Animal League America,

Shane continues to be a FANTASTIC pup. He is a wonderful and amazing companion. We walk for about an hour every morning, a good 2-3 miles over varying terrain. Interestingly, he never pants or seems tired at all - the last few days its been too cold (1 degree F and windy) for man or dog to be outside for any length of time, so he gets on the treadmill - (incidentally I notice he likes it better the faster he goes, he gets bored quickly if it's too slow).

We are taking a conservative approach to his exercise routine - because we don't want any injuries, and slowly increasing time on the treadmill. Just this morning, he was on the treadmill for 25 minutes at 5-6 mph - only during the last two minutes he opened his mouth as if he might be breathing heavy. When I stopped the machine he sits and waits for a small treat, and he is as cool as a cucumber. I'm convinced that Shane is Super Hound Dog, just unbelievably athletic.

I suppose I may be underestimating the exercise potential of 2.25 miles on the treadmill in 25 minutes. He does sleep soundly, in fact he's snoring at my feet as I write this, but I've never seen a dog exert as much energy as he does without some sign or hint of fatigue - even in winter. Our vet seems to think he is very fit.

I love that you trained him on the treadmill - it's a perfect way to exercise him in inclement weather. Anyway - I believe he is as happy with us as we are with him.

Thanks again for doing such a great job with him.

Best Regards,

Bob
