Question:

I adopted Hunter from the North Shore Animal League eight years ago, now I am being sued at court by my neighbor for different problems by the amount of $10,000 Since I Live in NJ what kind of Practice Attorney should I get, please respond ASAP.

Answer:

The kind of attorney you need depends on the claim against you. Your e-mail states you are being sued for $10,000 but there is no indication of the basis for the lawsuit. For example, if there is a civil lawsuit against you for damages or injury your pet allegedly caused, you would want to hire a personal injury attorney with experience in this area (unless you have home owners, renters, or other liability insurance, in which case the insurance company might handle the matter for you).

Question:

Is it against the law to keep a cow in a garage in the front yard? Our neighbor has a cow in his garage and he built a 19 x 19 foot pen that is attached to one end of his garage and he has it going around to the other end of his garage and in his front yard. We live out in the country in Saginaw County in Montrose Michigan and we are in Albee Township. I feel sorry for that poor cow and if he takes care of that like he does his dogs then that poor cow is in big trouble. He has a German shepherd in a 5 x 6 pen and they never let her out and they never clean out the pen and when they feed her they dump the food over the top of the pen on the ground and she has to eat out of her own feces. We have four dogs and they all have their shots are licensed and they are like our kids . The neighbor’s dogs have never been to a vet and they don't have their shots or license. I feel that it is animal abuse to the dogs and cow both I don't like seeing any animal abused. Who can I turn this into? Thank you.

Answer:

If your local humane society or animal control officer will not investigate your animal cruelty complaint, try contacting the Humane Society of Genesee County to see if they will investigate this matter or refer you to someone in your area who will. I realize that you reside in Saginaw County but oftentimes organizations in adjoining areas cross county lines to do animal cruelty investigations. There is also an organization, Rescue Ink (800-510-7355), which investigates cruelty to animals in various parts of the country. There may be zoning issues as well regarding the cow. You will need to contact your local town officials regarding that.

You should contact your local humane societies and societies for the prevention of cruelty to animals. They often need volunteers. Also, try contacting The Humane Society of the United States, West Coast Regional Office, 5301 Madison Ave., Suite 202, Sacramento, CA 95841-7220, 916-344-1710
