Hurricane Ike Ravages Texas Coastline and Beyond; North Shore Animal League America Deploys Emergency Response Team
September 13, 2008 (Port Washington, NY) – As Hurricane Ike continues its treacherous path into the Texas mainland, North Shore Animal League America’s Mobile Rescue Unit, staffed with an Emergency Response Team, is en route to the region.
The Emergency Response Team is prepared to offer assistance to Texas shelters whose animals have been evacuated from high risk areas, working in cooperation with the Humane Society SPCA of Bexar County in providing relief in freeing up dangerously overcrowded conditions. They are expected to transport many of the animals back to the Animal League’s Port Washington facility, the world’s largest no-kill animal rescue and adoption organization, where they will be put up for adoption into loving, permanent homes.
This is the team’s third emergency call in three weeks, having responded to a West Virginia puppy mill rescue, where we saved over 120 dogs, as well as the retrieval of 79 displaced animals from Hurricane Gustav, transported to the shelter by Mobile Rescue Units.
