Gorgeous Blossom and her six adorable pups are new members of the Animal League’s HELP Program: Help Every Little Pet.

Blossom is a young Terrier mix who was rescued from a municipal animal shelter in Georgia. When Blossom first came to the Animal League, she was diagnosed as Heartworm positive and pregnant.

Heartworm is a parasitic roundworm that is spread through mosquito bites. The parasite is called "Heartworm" because the adult worm usually resides in the host’s pulmonary artery. It can live there for many years and often goes unnoticed in the early stages. For dogs, Heartworm infection may result in serious disease. Infected dogs that go untreated can die, and Heartworm treatment also has risks.

The treatment and care for animals like Blossom and her babies is very expensive and takes the collective efforts of many skilled professionals and the help of dedicated supporters like you. Many municipal shelters usually don’t have the space, the proper medical facilities or the resources it takes to house, treat, and care for an entire family – especially one that needs medical care and will be needing more in the future. Tragically, many of these animals face euthanasia.

The doctors at the Animal League decided to hold off on Blossom’s Heartworm treatment until after the birth of her pups. They did not want to risk losing or harming any of Blossom’s babies. Little Blossom who was only 22 lbs. gave birth to a litter of nine puppies. Unfortunately, nature took three of them and they passed away. The remaining six puppies were all healthy, strong and very thirsty as you can see from the adorable video!

Blossom and her puppies are currently living in a foster care home. Once they are ready, they will all be spayed and neutered and placed for adoption.
