Penny joined the League's Sponsor Program in 2007. Penny is an exceptionally sweet cat. A gorgeous, grey feline, she is very playful, often goofy, and always affectionate. Penny first came to us as a tiny infant weighing only 14 ounces. Chances of survival are slim for such a young kitten without her mother. But the amazing staff at the League's Medical Center saved her little life with around the clock treatment and expertise. When Penny was three months old, she was adopted. |
Just one month later, however, her owner decided to return her when it became apparent that she had a medical condition. Penny was back in our care. North Shore Animal League America's veterinarians diagnosed Penny with ringworm, which was resolved, and the more serious acute renal dysplasia or renal failure. Renal failure is a condition where the kidneys fail to function properly. It is not uncommon for a cat to have this condition and not show any symptoms. Then all of a sudden, what may seem like out of nowhere, symptoms appear. Renal failure is a life-threatening disease, however, with proper treatment; a cat can still enjoy a good quality of life. Penny has to have a treatment of subcutaneous fluids once a day to help her kidneys function normally. Without this treatment, she will die. At some point, she will probably go on a special kidney-friendly diet, too. Penny has her whole life ahead of her. She is an amazingly friendly cat with a warm and loving disposition. She would love a home to run and play in. We hope we can make Penny's dreams come true and find her a dedicated family and a forever home.

Penny's Updates
4th Quarter 2009
Penny’s family has been working hard to slim her down and shed a few extra pounds, but it’s been difficult finding the right food for Penny. She is quite picky and hasn’t really taken to any of the varieties she’s tried. The quest for her favorite food continues. Aside from her food troubles, Penny has been keeping busy. She seems to like catnip and gets curious when she sees the other cats playing with a toy, but loses interest fast. However, she has discovered a fascination for flying insects and will jump and chase them and swat her paw against the walls for hours in an attempt to catch them. She usually tuckers herself out and needs a cool, refreshing drink, which she gets by sticking her head into a watering can to lap up some water. Her foster mom can’t seem to get her to drink from a water dish, but Penny fancies the watering can that her foster mom puts out just for her.
3rd Quarter 2009
Penny is feeling great and is continuing to enjoy her life at home with the many other felines she gets to horse around with. Penny and Emmy, a Hurricane Katrina survivor cat, are the two cats that seem to enjoy play time the most. Penny's adoptive mom finds that even though Emmy is much smaller than Penny, she is very smart and gives Penny a run for her money. Penny usually wins their friendly brawls, but Emmy has been known to ambush Penny while she is taking a nap or by jumping from above when Penny is not suspecting it!
2nd Quarter 2009
Penny has had no problem cohabitating with the other furry felines in her home. Unlike some of the other cats who hid under the bed or snuck into the closet when they were first brought home, Penny has claimed her favorite spots and ventures around as she sees fit. She especially loves perching herself by the window to watch the hustle and bustle outside. When she's done relaxing she does like to romp around, playfully wrestling and sneaking toys away from the other cats. She has also been feeling great and hasn't given her adoptive mother any problems when she administers her daily fluids. Her adoptive mother has even begun warming her fluids slightly on a heating pad so that it isn't so chilly under Penny's skin; Penny seems appreciative.
1st Quarter 2009
Penny has fit right in to her new home, which isn't always easy when there are 5 other felines! Penny's adoptive family has taken in 5 other cats from the Animal League; each with their own special story just like Penny. Penny has found one special friend, a Hurricane Katrina rescue named Katie, to play with. Her adoptive family was so happy when they heard some rustling on the floor and discovered Penny and Katie playing with toys together and chasing each other around. We couldn't be happier that Penny has found a loving home and some great new companions!
4th Quarter 2008
Penny's adoptive parents advised that she has been feeling well and has not had any health concerns this past month. She takes her medication without any fuss and doesn't seem to mind that her adoptive sibling Zippy doesn't have daily medication just like her! Penny's family has noticed that she likes to spend her time lounging under the dresser and also laying across the window sill where she watches the birds. When she gets a little rambunctious you can find her and Zippy swatting at each other playfully. Her adoptive parents said that Zippy and Penny love to play together - including hiding from each other, jumping, chasing and batting one another's tails.
3rd Quarter 2008
Penny continues to be a good sport with taking her daily fluids and rarely puts up a fight. She also continues to be rambunctious and playful. Her foster parent has made sure to provide Penny, and her friend Zippy, with additional toys and scratching posts. He is hoping that this will help ensure that both Penny and Zippy keep their paws off of the furniture. His plan seems to be working and the toys with cat nip seem to be keeping Penny pretty busy. She usually tires herself out with all her rigorous play and instead of scratching the couch; she jumps up on it to take a nap.
2nd Quarter 2008
Penny came in for her very first check-up since being adopted and she seems to be blossoming. Penny has even developed a great bond with Zippy, her feline friend at home. They enjoy sharing food, toys, and the occasional game of “cat and mouse” around the condo. Thanks to the dedication of her Sponsors, Penny has been given a great quality of life and has finally made it to the perfect forever home.
1st Quarter 2008
Penny continues to get her daily fluids and medication. She's been feeling so good that you can catch her showing off during play groups in the shelter's cat room! When she's all tuckered out from jumping around, she likes to perch up on the shoulder of a League staff member. There, she enjoys peering out at the other cats chasing their tails. Then Penny relaxes in her cage with her favorite stuffed animal - a little monkey! While Penny is happy here at the League and gets all the medical care and love she could ever need, we hope that the right person comes along to adopt this special cat so that she can enjoy a loving family for the very first time in her life.
4th Quarter 2007
Our beautiful resident cat, Penny has been just great lately. She's in good health and good spirits, but can be a very finicky feline, as her moods can change on a dime. She enjoys strutting her stuff in front of the other cats in the cat room, and enjoys stealing the attention of all the human visitors. A bit on the temperamental side, Penny also enjoys her quiet time. Some days, she's all about hugs and snugs, while other days, all she really wants is to perch in the window and bask in the sun.
3rd Quarter 2007
Our pretty Penny has been just as happy as can be since she moved into the League's very own “Cat Habitat.” With plenty of fun toys to play with and interesting crevices to hide in, Penny keeps busy all day long!
2nd Quarter 2007
Pretty Penny has been in good spirits. She gets plenty of love and attention from everyone who passes by, as her big yellow eyes lure everyone in. Penny is a young cat and enjoys her time play time. She likes to pounce and play and has several toys to keep her busy. Once she's all worn out, she enjoys a nap in her fuzzy bedding that she likes to keep piled high.
