"Scarlett" is a symbolic cat that represents all the real and wonderful cats in North Shore Animal League America's care - those that have been innocent victims of abandonment and cruelty. Some have been beaten or stabbed, some have been victims of neglect and others have simply been deserted once they were no longer cute little kittens or have become too inconvenient. All of them need plenty of extra love and care which we provide every day. Many of these pets may spend the rest of their lives with us due to their life-long demanding medical needs or behavioral issues. Some just need extra time to find their forever homes. Until then, they need your support. Won't you consider sponsoring "Scarlett"?

Scarlett's Updates

3rd Quarter 2009
This quarterly update features Sponsor Program cat Lady Harmony. During her most recent medical check-up, she was terrified up until the actual exam, and then she became very feisty! Her general blood work came back fine. Another special blood test was done to see if she has developed diabetes again which came back normal and means the special diet she is on is working to prevent her diabetes from reoccurring. She has lost one and a half pounds which is very positive because she is overweight. She is now eating the right amount for her weight. In addition, Lady Harmony had her echocardiogram done by a cardiologist, and although it did show some heart changes, no medication is needed at this time. Thankfully, it does not clinically affect her.

2nd Quarter 2009
Every year, North Shore Animal League America travels the nation bringing its life-saving mission on the road to help find homes for hundreds of orphaned dogs, cats, puppies and kittens and to raise public awareness concerning the plights of all shelter pets. Stopping in more than 20 U.S. cities across America to help save pets' lives, Tour for Life is the Animal League's month-long cooperative initiative with animal shelters across the country. Since its inception in 2001, Tour for Life has been promoting the importance of adopting shelter dogs and cats as a life-saving measure. This year, the Animal League is excited to have as our spokesperson Kathryn Erbe, star of Law and Order: Criminal Intent and also spokesperson for the American Mutt-i-grees™ Club (AMC). Tour For Life, in partnership with Purina, has placed thousands of homeless animals with loving families. This year the tour celebrates mixed breed dogs helping advance the mission of the American Mutt-i-grees™ Club, which promotes shelter adoptions and discourages purchasing pets from retailers supplied by puppy mills.

1st Quarter 2009
"Scarlett" is a symbolic cat that represents all the real and wonderful cats in North Shore Animal League America's Sponsor Program. This monthly giving program is dedicated solely to the care of cats and dogs with special-needs. Shelter pets that have an array of health problems and require surgeries are often destroyed due to the expense and staff required for their care. But at the Animal League, these innocent and deserving pets are given a second chance at the best quality of life possible through monthly support from kindhearted and committed individuals like you. Whatever medical conditions or physical disabilities they are challenged with, the Animal League pledges to take care of each and every one of them for the rest of their lives. Their care includes everything from daily medications, special surgeries and physical therapy to 24-hour love and intensive care. Many of the cats in the Sponsor Program have been fortunate enough to be placed into loving foster care homes or have been adopted, but will remain in the Animal League's Sponsor Program forever. With the help of generous monthly Sponsors like you, these cats will live out the rest of their days as healthy and happy as possible. We are honored that you have chosen to be their Sponsor Program pet parent – thank you!

4th Quarter 2008
Thanks to your sponsorship of "Scarlett", which helps all of the cats in our care, we were able to save kitten Willie, who was found roaming the streets. He was brought to the Animal League with a severe respiratory infection and poor eyes. The globe in his left eye ruptured and needed to be removed. The doctors have been taking care of Willie for weeks - working on his infection with fluids, hydration and antibiotic. A few more weeks of expert medical care and he should be as good as new.

3rd Quarter 2008
Thank you for being a Sponsor! Without your committed support we may not be able to give the necessary care to the hundreds of cats and kittens who come to our doorstep each year. At North Shore Animal League America, we don't deny care to any animal - no matter their age, health, or breed. Why? Because we believe that all animals are innocent and all animals deserve a chance at life. Caring and compassionate friends like you make it possible for us to help each one of the felines in our care - your gifts, especially monthly sponsorship support, are vital to keeping our mission and the Sponsor Program alive. Thank you for being a part of it with us!

2nd Quarter 2008
Thanks to your monthly sponsorship of "Scarlett", which helps all the cats in our care, the Animal League was able to add four new cats to the Sponsor Program. Their compelling stories are right here in this brochure. Be sure to read about Celine, Jesse, Little Bean and Napoleon. They are urgently in need of Sponsors like you. Be the first to sponsor them...and love them...today!

1st Quarter 2008
Your sponsorship of "Scarlett" helps so many cats in our care - like Noelle, who at only six months old was hit by a car and abandoned by her owner at the League. She was able to have the extensive emergency surgery necessary to have skin reattached to her body which was removed from the horrific accident. Noelle needs lots of time to heal from her surgery, her broken pelvis and her amputated tail. She should make a full recovery and be able to have a second chance at a life of peace and happiness. Your monthly donations are critical to the success of the Sponsor Program - thank you for sharing your heart with the League.

4th Quarter 2007
League feline mascot Scarlett represents all the cats at the League. When you sponsor Scarlett, you help care for every cat on our grounds. Your generosity makes it possible for them to get all the care and treatment they need; like Twister, a tiny little kitty who came to us with both his eyes protruding out of their sockets from ruptured globes. This little sweetheart will need both of his eyes removed when his weight is high enough to undergo surgery. If it wasn't for your care and concern, Twister could have died. Thank you for all that you do for them.

3rd Quarter 2007
"Scarlett" represents all of our wonderful special needs felines. Your support of Scarlett has given countless underprivileged cats the best lives possible. We are so very grateful to have dedicated friends like you.

2nd Quarter 2007
"Scarlett" represents all the cats at the League. Your support of "Scarlett" helps us to care for so many cats and kittens that so desperately need our help - some of whom have been here for a long time. Thanks to your generosity, we were able to care for Sugar and Princess for two years until just recently when they got adopted!! We were so happy that we were able to be their temporary home and that they finally have a forever home of their very own. On behalf of Sugar and Princess and all our feline friends, thank you.

1st Quarter 2007
"Scarlett" represents ALL the cats in our care - so we'd like to tell you about Gumby, a senior, domestic shorthair. Gumby was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and needed radiation therapy. She had undergone about a week of these treatments before the healing process began. Because you care so deeply, we were able to save Gumby from an ominous fate; and she is now out of danger and ready for adoption. Thank you so much for caring. Your generosity and compassion truly makes a difference.

4th Quarter 2006
"Scarlett" represents ALL the cats in our care - so we'd like to tell you about a beautiful, six-month old, calico cat named Tweety. A victim of animal cruelty, Tweety was thrown from a window and broke her right hind leg. Luckily, a neighbor brought her to the League's medical center in time for urgent treatment. X-rays were taken and a splint was bandaged to her leg. We are proud to report that Tweety is healing and resting comfortably thanks to the medical care your Sponsor funding provides!

3rd Quarter 2006
"Scarlett" represents all the cats in our care. This little one's name is Squishy and he was born with a congenital heart defect. When he was first brought here after being rescued from a city shelter, a heart murmur was detected and was described as sounding like a washing machine in this little guy's chest! Blood traveling from his heart followed an abnormal path and thus caused a major strain on his little heart. Open-heart surgery was his only chance at a normal life. Because of our generous donors, we were able to provide Squishy the life-saving surgery he so desperately needed. He sailed through recovery like a champ and we are happy to say is doing quite well. This is just another one of the many happy endings here at North Shore Animal League America, thanks to supporters like you.

November 2005
Animal shelters everywhere can mean the difference between life and death for abandoned pets. The commitment of shelter staff is relentless and National Shelter Appreciation Week (November 7th - 13th), is a great time to say thank you to all those who work with animals in shelters. North Shore Animal League America's special needs animals simply could not survive without the help of dedicated, caring animal lovers just like them…and you. Thanks for helping save innocent animals lives.

October 2005
Halloween can be fun and festive for people, but for pets it can also be dangerous. Here are some tips from North Shore Animal League America to help you ensure that your pet has a happy and safe Halloween:

  • Don't leave your pet outside unattended - Halloween pranks can put animals at risk.
  • Halloween treats are for people, not pets - candy and chocolate can be dangerous and possibly poisonous for animals.
  • If you dress your pet up in a costume, be sure that its costume doesn't interfere with the pet's ability to breathe, see, hear, move, or bark.

For more information and tips about holiday safety for pets, call or visit your family veterinarian. Have a safe and happy Halloween!

August 2005
We celebrate Mother's Day and Father's Day, Secretary's Day and even a day to bring your dog to work.  But we never put aside a day for our furry feline friends.  That oversight will soon be corrected if Stu Hample has anything to say about it.  Mr. Hample, popular author of Children's Letters to God, has written a new book - Happy Cat Day: A Manifesto for an Official Cat Holiday - to rally animal lovers around the cause.  Let's make make Stu Hample's dream a reality! Visit our website at www.nsalamerica.org to add your name to the Happy Cat Day petition to be sent to federal legislators.

July 2005
Summer is a time for fun and relaxation - even for our four-pawed friends. This summer we want to remind you of these simple tips:

  • Do not leave your pet in a car; a pet's temperature can rise rapidly and to dangerous levels within minutes.
  • Always make sure your pet has fresh, cool, and clean water available; keeping hydrated is extremely important.
  • Do not allow your dog to hang out of the window of a moving vehicle, rocks or tree limbs may hit your pet, or he/she might fall or jump out.
  • Check your pet daily for fleas and ticks, and have your dog checked for heartworm.
  • Most of all stay safe and enjoy this wonderful time of year with the pets you love.

May 2005
Spring is a time for fun and relaxation. This Spring we want to remind you of a few simple tips to keep your pets safe and happy: Vaccinate; warmer weather brings out more pets, as well as wildlife which can carry rabies, distemper and other contagious diseases. Stop fleas & ticks; check with your veterinarian to find out about the latest, easy-to-use flea and tick products. Use pet ID tags; make sure your pet has an identification tag on its collar - it can save his or her life. Most of all stay safe and enjoy this wonderful time of year with the pets you love.

April 2005
Pet Adoptathon® began at North Shore Animal League America in 1995 as a weekend happening with the goal of finding a loving home for each and every animal in the shelter. The event was an overwhelming success and we found homes for almost every dog, cat, puppy, and kitten in the adoption center! Now every year, hundreds of animal organizations everywhere set aside the first weekend in May and join together to find homes for all their orphaned pets. To date, Pet Adoptathon has saved over 225,000 animals! We would like to invite you to participate in finding a new best friend at North Shore Animal League America's International Pet Adoptathon weekend on April 30 ~ May 1st, 2005. Please check out our website for more detailed information.
