“Hurricane Charlie” joined the League's Sponsor Program in January 2006. Hurricane Charlie was named after one of the most outstanding rescue efforts the League has ever done. That effort was Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Hurricane Charlie is a yellow Labrador-mix who quickly won the hearts of many of the League's staff members and donors. As expected from the Hurricane Katrina devastation, Hurricane Charlie was exposed to deplorable conditions that resulted in a number of health problems, including heartworm. As you can imagine, Hurricane Charlie became frightened and protective around his food and people as a result of this disaster. |
Further testing revealed that Hurricane Charlie was in the late stages of renal failure. Luckily, the many hours of behavioral training with dedicated League staff members paid off and Hurricane Charlie was able to be placed into a loving foster home. So loving was that foster home that they decided to adopt Hurricane Charlie and make him a member of their own family…forever. Hurricane Charlie still requires medical care and monitoring, and will for the rest of his life. Your monthly donations help the League continue their magnanimous efforts to keep Hurricane Charlie and all the helpless special-needs pets as happy and comfortable as possible.
Hurricane Charlie's Updates
2nd Quarter 2009
It's a wonderful time of year for Hurricane Charlie...that's right, it's his birthday! Charlie Bear will be turning 6 years old. For his birthday celebration Charlie's family makes a point to spoil him more than they normally do. A visit to the local farmer's market is in order and his adoptive mom usually comes back with a few different treats that Charlie loves; of course they are all made with ingredients that coincide with his special diet. Charlie's family also showers him with love and affection. Because Charlie suffers from renal disease his family values each and every day they share with Charlie and loves to celebrate another year of fun with their special pal. Happy Birthday Charlie!!
1st Quarter 2009
Hurricane Charlie hasn't let the passing of his favorite gift giving time of year get him down. While he truly loved sniffing around for wrapped presents and ringing in the New Year with some barks and tail-wagging with family members, he has gotten back to some of his other favorite activities with ease. Charlie's family advised that their loveable canine has been scavenging for golf balls that are hit over the fence at a nearby miniature golf course. Even though it's getting colder outside, he could spend hours sniffing around for stray golf balls with content.
4th Quarter 2008
Our happy Hurricane Charlie has been up to his old antics once again. He has gotten into the October spirit and started harvesting the crops in the backyard garden. Unfortunately, he wasn't sharing what he picked with the rest of the family! His family reports that they spotted Hurricane Charlie in the yard rummaging through the vegetables they've been working hard to grow. During his past raid Charlie ate most of the cherry tomatoes right off of the vine. They are one of his favorite treats. Luckily before every last one of the tomatoes was gobbled up his family shooed him away!
3rd Quarter 2008
Hurricane Charlie is definitely the model pet and his family loves involving him in all their activities and looks forward to taking him for his walks each day. And Charlie certainly misses his family whenever they leave. When his family goes to work in the morning, or anywhere for that matter, Charlie runs to the large window in the living room to watch them until they drive away. The moment they return, Charlie darts to the back door with his tail wagging to greet them as they walk through the door. He surely is man's best friend!
2nd Quarter 2008
Hurricane Charlie recently celebrated his 5th birthday! His family showered him with love, kisses and, of course, some yummy treats that fit right into his diet. In light of his recent check-up, whose results revealed that his illness may have progressed, Hurricane Charlie's celebration was definitely what the doctor ordered.
1st Quarter 2008
Hurricane Charlie continues to enjoy every day of his California lifestyle – especially since his health has shown improvement. Hurricane Charlie has been keeping busy playing with the many new toys he received from his Sponsors during the holiday season. His latest favorites are a green frog and a stuffed bunny. But that's not all he does for exercise, Hurricane Charlie also goes for daily walks in the orchard near his home! Although this is his favorite part of the day, Hurricane Charlie also enjoys his ongoing behavioral training. That's because he gets rewarded with delicious fresh fruits and vegetables, which compliment his special diet. Now that certainly is a dog's life!
4th Quarter 2007
Charlie and Carol love their daily walks. Twice a day, they spend quality time strolling around the neighborhood. There has recently been a huge improvement in Charlie's behavior. Recently, on one of their walks, a Great Dane snarled at him and challenged him. Surprisingly, Charlie didn't react. Instead, he just disregarded the dog. It seems that in the last month, Charlie has really calmed down. It just goes to show you the healing effects of a loving family.
3rd Quarter 2007
Hurricane Charlie is as contented as a dog could ever hope to be. When you look at recent pictures, you see a different dog than was here just a year ago. The boundless love and happiness he receives daily are written all over his face.
2nd Quarter 2007
Hurricane Charlie is as happy as we could have ever hoped for. His adopted family is just wild about him and spoils him with plenty of toys, treats, long walks on the beach and endless love. Hurricane Charlie has truly come a long way since he was a victim of Hurricane Katrina, and his wonderful family is always in touch with us to let us know of his continuous progress.
1st Quarter 2007
Hurricane Charlie continues to live it up in his new home. California certainly seems to suit him well, especially after surviving Hurricane Katrina. His adopted family told us that his behavior problems are definitely showing improvement and he is adjusting as best he can. We knew that a warm and loving family would do wonders for him. What a delightful happy ending to such a tragic tale. Because of you, we are able to help animals like Hurricane Charlie have a second chance at happiness. Thank you!
4th Quarter 2006
Hurricane Charlie, our rescued pup from Hurricane Katrina, is having some problems with his kidneys which are being monitored. His adopted parents are also working with him on some of his behavioral issues, such as lots of barking when strangers come to the house. He also loves to jump up on the couch, which is a "no, no"! Hurricane Charlie's manners are showing improvement and he is having a wonderful time in his new home. He especially enjoys going out for walks in the fresh air!
3rd Quarter 2006
Last time we told you that a family was interested in adopting Hurricane Charlie and we are so excited to tell you that our hopes have come true! We are still covering the cost of his medical care for his lifetime so Hurricane Charlie will remain in the Sponsor Program. His kidney problems for the time being seem to be under control. He is still adjusting to living in a home and sometimes is having a hard time behaving himself. Luckily we found a family (with grown up kids) who has experience dealing with dogs that have behavioral problems. Hurricane Charlie was a challenge to adopt out, but we are so thankful he has found a loving family who can care for him and give him what he needs.
2nd Quarter 2006
One of our newest additions to the Sponsor program, Hurricane Charlie has been being a pretty good boy here at the League. Since he's been with us for so long, he can barely go out for a walk without someone stopping him to say hello. It's almost as if he has his very own fan club right here at the League! Our trainers have been working with him regarding his behavioral problems, and we are happy to report that he is coming along quite nicely. We don't know how long Hurricane Charlie has to live because his kidneys do not function properly, but we are committed to giving him the best life possible. We even think we may have a family interested in adopting him! Stay tuned…..!
