"Harry" is a symbolic dog that represents all the real and wonderful dogs in North Shore Animal League America's care - those that have been innocent victims of abandonment and cruelty. Some have been beaten or stabbed, some have been victims of neglect, and others have simply been deserted once they were no longer cute little puppies or they became too inconvenient. All of them need plenty of extra love and care, which we provide every day. Many of these pets may spend the rest of their lives with us due to their life-long demanding medical needs or behavioral issues. Some just need extra time to find their forever homes. Until then, they need your support. Won't you consider sponsoring "Harry"? |
Harry's Updates
3rd Quarter 2009
This quarterly update features Sponsor Program dog Toby. He is still due for a routine check-up and will be coming to the Animal League's medical center soon. Toby's last scheduled appointment was cancelled due to his rigorous summer schedule! He's been frolicking at the beach; accompanying his foster mother, Erin, to family barbeques and taking long naps in the shaded grass in the backyard. Hey, we do want him to live a dog's life! We also want to take this opportunity to reach out to Toby's Sponsors and all the Sponsor Program donors to say thank you for helping these special-needs pets live their best quality of life. Without your support, saving pet's lives would not be possible.
2nd Quarter 2009
Every year, North Shore Animal League America travels the nation bringing its life-saving mission on the road to help find homes for hundreds of orphaned dogs, cats, puppies and kittens and to raise public awareness concerning the plights of all shelter pets. Stopping in more than 20 U.S. cities across America to help save pets' lives, Tour for Life is the Animal League's month-long cooperative initiative with animal shelters across the country. Since its inception in 2001, Tour for Life has been promoting the importance of adopting shelter dogs and cats as a life-saving measure. This year, the Animal League is excited to have as our spokesperson Kathryn Erbe, star of Law and Order: Criminal Intent and also spokesperson for the American Mutt-i-grees™ Club (AMC). Tour For Life, in partnership with Purina, has placed thousands of homeless animals with loving families. This year the tour celebrates mixed breed dogs helping advance the mission of the American Mutt-i-grees™ Club, which promotes shelter adoptions and discourages purchasing pets from retailers supplied by puppy mills.
1st Quarter 2009
"Harry" is a symbolic dog that represents all the real and wonderful dogs in North Shore Animal League America's Sponsor Program. This monthly giving program is dedicated solely to the care of dogs and cats with special-needs. Shelter pets that have an array of health problems and require surgeries are often destroyed due to the expense and staff required for their care. But at the Animal League, these innocent and deserving pets are given a second chance at the best quality of life possible through monthly support from kindhearted and committed individuals like you. Whatever medical conditions or physical disabilities they are challenged with, the Animal League pledges to take care of each and every one of them for the rest of their lives. Their care includes everything from daily medications, special surgeries and physical therapy to 24-hour love and intensive care. Many of the dogs in the Sponsor Program have been fortunate enough to be placed into loving foster care homes or have been adopted, but will remain in the Animal League's Sponsor Program forever. With the help of generous monthly Sponsors like you, these dogs will live out the rest of their days as healthy and happy as possible. We are honored that you have chosen to be their Sponsor Program pet parent – thank you!
4th Quarter 2008
Thanks to your sponsorship of "Harry" we can rescue dogs like Swiss, who was tied to a pole and left to die. He wound up in a local city shelter with awful bites all over his face and body. Since it's impossible to tell if the dogs that bit him were rabies vaccinated or not, the law requires that either he be tested for rabies or held in quarantine for six months. Because the local shelter didn't have the time or space to keep him for so long, he would have to be euthanized. The Animal League rescued Swiss and now he is getting the care he needs until he is adopted.
3rd Quarter 2008
Thanks to your sponsorship of "Harry" we can rescue adult dogs like brothers Charles and Max who wound up homeless and in need of corrective surgery on their knees. They both suffer from Medial Patellar Luxation (MPL). This is a condition where their knees come out of their sockets, and it's pretty painful. In some cases of MPL, physical therapy is enough, but theirs is advanced, and they need surgery so that they don't lose mobility. With your support, they will receive the surgeries and extensive physical therapy necessary for their knees to get better – as much as several times a day for a few months!
2nd Quarter 2008
Thanks to your sponsorship of "Harry" which benefits all the dogs in our care, we can help puppies like Jojo. Jojo is a female black Labrador retriever mix who has a congenital heart defect. Jojo was born with a Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA). The Ductus Arteriosus is a normal vessel in the hearts of unborn animals. It allows the circulation to bypass the lungs (since they don't need to use them at that time). When an animal is born and takes its first little breath, the ductus closes. But not in Jojo's heart. The ductus remained open (or patent), and is causing too much blood to be shunted from one side of her heart to the other. Jojo will require heart surgery to save her life.
1st Quarter 2008
Thanks to your sponsorship of "Harry" which benefits all the dogs in our care, the League is able to continue to partner with Animal Rescue Team Taiwan, (ARTT). They recently collaborated in a third rescue operation to save unwanted dogs from death in their native country. The animals were brought back to the League for care and grooming, as well as behavior and medical evaluation. The dogs are now safe and being prepared to be put up for adoption. ARTT was founded as a protection group to help save dogs from senseless slaughter in countries where animals are not revered as they are in the United States. ARTT arranged for transport to the States with volunteers who serve as escorts.
4th Quarter 2007
Harry represents all of the animals in the League. Your sponsorship of Harry makes it possible for countless dogs to get the necessary care to be healthy and happy. Recently, we acquired a tiny Chihuahua puppy who was born premature. The little fellow needs round the clock care and fostering. Thanks to generous sponsors like you, he will be able to grow up to be a healthy and happy dog. Thank you for all that you do.
3rd Quarter 2007
"Harry represents all the animals in our care." Thanks to your generous support, we are able to help so many deserved animals get the medical treatment and care they so desperately need. We are grateful to have dedicated friends like you.
2nd Quarter 2007
Because kind and generous people like you sponsor "Harry," who represents all the dogs in our care, we are able to provide intensive medical care to so many animals in need. Recently, a scruffy terrier mix named Jamaica came into our care. Jamaica is going to need stomach surgery to remove painful bladder stones. She will only have this surgery after she recovers from her heart worm treatments. Because our supporters are as dedicated as we are, Jamaica and others like her will have the chance for good health and happiness. Thank you.
1st Quarter 2007
"Harry" represents all the dogs in our care. Because of your kind and generous sponsorship pledges, we are able to provide the necessary medical care for so many wonderful animals like our new friend, Pogo. Pogo was rescued from a shelter in December 2006. She was born with a physical deformity where her leg was up and inside of her and just dangled from the socket. Though she was not in pain from this, we did not want to take the chance of her lifeless leg getting caught on something and causing unnecessary injury; so the doctors in the League's Medical Center decided to amputate Pogo's numb limb to avoid potential problems. She is fully recovered and waiting to be adopted into a loving home. Thank you so much for making this possible.
4th Quarter 2006
"Harry" represents ALL the dogs in our care - so we'd like to tell you a special Chihuahua mix named Toby. Toby has a congenital bulge in his esophagus and has to remain upright when he eats to ensure that his food goes down. To eat, he must be in a baby walker for meal times, and stay for 20 minutes afterwards. He is a loving little guy who likes going for walks. It's because of your Sponsorship pledge that we are able to give Toby the medical care he urgently needs. Now, he's living as happy a life as possible!
3rd Quarter 2006
Because "Harry" represents all the dogs in our care, we wanted to bring you the story of this big lovable lug, Stanley. A Hurricane Katrina survivor, he came to us with bad hips and bad knees on both hind legs. It was apparent he was in pain, as he was not walking properly. Left untreated, it would have only gotten worse. We went to work raising funds so that Stanley could have his surgeries. The hard work paid off, and Stanley went through two major orthopedic surgeries. Afterwards, he waited patiently, with his activity limited so that he healed properly. Eight long months later Stanley's (and ours) wishes came true when he was adopted by a loving man who wants nothing but to give Stan a great and stable home, while he builds those back muscles up. Stanley is another story of Hope and Survival, and why it's important to never give up, even when the obstacles seem so great.
2nd Quarter 2006
Most people think of mixed breeds dogs when they think of animal shelters. The truth is we often receive calls from families in need of re-homing their pure bred pets for various reasons. Take for example this handsome dog, Luck who was admitted to North Shore Animal League America at two years of age because his owners no longer had the room for him, and their other dog was fighting with him. Neither of these reasons is the fault of this big lug, but here he is at our shelter - a pure bred Saint Bernard. We'll do everything we can to make Luck feel at home and to find him a great family who won't let him down. The next time you walk into your local municipal shelter you just might be surprised by which canines are there to greet you!

November 2005
Animal shelters everywhere can mean the difference between life and death for abandoned pets. The commitment of shelter staff is relentless and National Shelter Appreciation Week (November 7th - 13th), is a great time to say thank you to all those who work with animals in shelters. North Shore Animal League America's special needs animals simply could not survive without the help of dedicated, caring animal lovers just like them…and you. Thanks for helping save innocent animals lives.
October 2005
Halloween can be fun and festive for people, but for pets it can also be dangerous. Here are some tips from North Shore Animal League America to help you ensure that your pet has a happy and safe Halloween:
- Don't leave your pet outside unattended – Halloween pranks can put animals at risk.
- Halloween treats are for people, not pets – candy and chocolate can be dangerous and possibly poisonous for animals.
- If you dress your pet up in a costume, be sure that its costume doesn't interfere with the pet's ability to breathe, see, hear, move, or bark.
For more information and tips about holiday safety for pets, call or visit your family veterinarian. Have a safe and happy Halloween!

August 2005
We celebrate Mother's Day and Father's Day, Secretary's Day and even a day to bring your dog to work. But we never put aside a day for our furry feline friends. That oversight will soon be corrected if Stu Hample has anything to say about it. Mr. Hample, popular author of Children's Letters to God, has written a new book – Happy Cat Day: A Manifesto for an Official Cat Holiday – to rally animal lovers around the cause. Let's make Stu Hample's dream a reality! Visit our website at www.nsalamerica.org to add your name to the Happy Cat Day petition to be sent to federal legislators.
July 2005
Summer is a time for fun and relaxation – even for our four-pawed friends. This summer we want to remind you of these simple tips:
Do not leave your pet in a car; a pet's temperature can rise rapidly and to dangerous levels within minutes. Always make sure your pet has fresh, cool, and clean water available; keeping hydrated is extremely important. Do not allow your dog to hang out of the window of a moving vehicle, rocks or tree limbs may hit your pet, or he/she might fall or jump out. Check your pet daily for fleas and ticks, and have your dog checked for heartworm. Most of all stay safe and enjoy this wonderful time of year with the pets you love.
June 2005
June is Adopt a Shelter Cat Month! There are so many adorable cats and kittens waiting to be adopted from shelters across the country. From the cat that has been at the shelter for over a month, to the kitten that's just come through the door, both need and want a loving home like yours. So if you've been thinking about adopting – now might be the perfect time! Be a part of Adopt a Shelter Cat Month. Visit your local shelter and make a difference in a cat's life today.
May 2005
Spring is a time for fun and relaxation. This Spring we want to remind you of a few simple tips to keep your pets safe and happy: Vaccinate; warmer weather brings out more pets, as well as wildlife which can carry rabies, distemper and other contagious diseases. Stop fleas & ticks; check with your veterinarian to find out about the latest, easy-to-use flea and tick products. Use pet ID tags; make sure your pet has an identification tag on its collar - it can save his or her life. Most of all stay safe and enjoy this wonderful time of year with the pets you love.
April 2005
Pet Adoptathon® began at North Shore Animal League America in 1995 as a weekend happening with the goal of finding a loving home for each and every animal in the shelter. The event was an overwhelming success and we found homes for almost every dog, cat, puppy, and kitten in the adoption center! Now every year, hundreds of animal organizations everywhere set aside the first weekend in May and join together to find homes for all their orphaned pets. To date, Pet Adoptathon has saved over 225,000 animals! We would like to invite you to participate in finding a new best friend at North Shore Animal League America's International Pet Adoptathon weekend on April 30 ~ May 1st, 2005. Please check out our website for more detailed information. .
