Pablo joined the League's Sponsor Program in 2007. Pablo is a precious Chihuahua with a will to live. Pablo, like his siblings, was born without front legs. We have surmised that Pablo is an innocent victim of backyard breeding. Though he is completely healthy otherwise, Pablo will need extensive therapy to learn to walk on his hind legs so that he can be mobile. We also hope to eventually fit him with an apparatus that will aid him in walking so that he does not have to solely rely on his back legs. |
Pablo has two sisters, Venus and Carmen who also have the same birth disadvantage. Pablo is definitely the dominant one in the group and keeps the girls in line when he finds it necessary. Darling Pablo is such an enthusiastic and animated little dog. Named after the legendary Spanish artist, Pablo Picasso, Pablo the Chihuahua is one of North Shore Animal League America's great works of art. Without the help of generous Sponsors, Pablo and his sisters would have little chance for survival. They need to be trained to walk on their hind legs and will need special medical care their entire lives to enjoy a happy and healthy life. They have not had the best start in life, and will have difficulties to overcome in the future. But North Shore Animal League America believes that ALL pets deserve a chance at a long and healthy life – and Pablo and his family are no exception.

Pablo's Updates
3rd Quarter 2009
Pablo has been doing wonderful and his adoptive family has definitely noticed his love for the summer weather. In the yard they have a gated area where Pablo, along with Venus, Carmen and Scooter, can hop, walk and scoot around. Pablo seems to enjoy the sunny weather and basks in it for hours. But to avoid getting too hot his adoptive family has set up a small tent so Pablo and his siblings can take a rest in the shade if they would like to.
2nd Quarter 2009
Pablo and his siblings couldn't be happier with their carefree lifestyle. Their adoptive mother makes sure to keep up with their busy social life and surprisingly Pablo doesn't tire of his many play dates. There are quite a few dogs in the neighborhood that Pablo plays with and despite having only two legs, he keeps up with all of them. Pablo's adoptive mother says that he is a ball of energy and can be seen running and hopping around in delight. In addition to all the furry friends he has, Pablo has also become close with some of the neighborhood children and recently attended yet another birthday party; he spent the entire time "working the room" for attention. Needless to say he was fussed over by all the kids!
1st Quarter 2009
Pablo, along with Venus and Carmen, hasn't been able to exercise outside as much as he used to in his wheel cart since it has been so frigid. Pablo truly loved running in the circular driveway in his cart, but the snow makes it a little cumbersome to navigate. However, he does have plenty of space indoors to run around and he loves the many visitors that come over. Pablo's adoptive family frequently receives visits from their grandchildren who climb right inside of the gated area where Venus, Carmen and Pablo play. Pablo loves playing with them and, despite only having two legs, can be caught chasing them around!
4th Quarter 2008
The little trio of Pablo, Venus and Carmen are still maintaining their celebrity status. Pablo and his siblings were recently featured in the October issue of National Geographic Kids magazine. All three of these adorable and persevering Chihuahuas were shown in a feature titled "Amazing Animals". And we agree - they sure are amazing! In addition to all the glitz and glamour Pablo, Venus and Carmen have been experiencing they have extremely fulfilling lives at home and enjoy spending time with their family.
3rd Quarter 2008
With the new addition of Scooter to his home, Pablo definitely has even more of a reason to be a great example of a big brother. Scooter, another two-legged male Chihuahua, is still quite tiny and looks up to Pablo to teach him all he knows. Pablo sets a great example by persevering through the difficulties of walking upright and in the wheel-cart by continually practicing. Unfortunately, Pablo tries to wriggle away whenever his foster parents try to clip his nails or clean his ears. Hopefully, Scooter won't be following suit!
2nd Quarter 2008
Pablo has once again been quite the show-off in his customized wheel-cart. His daily training has improved his strength and has also helped his posture. Being that he is the largest of his siblings, the wheel-cart has greatly helped relieve the stress on his hind legs and back. His adoptive mother has reported that Pablo has increased the time he is able to stay in his wheel-cart and now spends a large majority of his day prancing around like any other pooch. His favorite part of the day is when he races his sisters, Venus and Carmen, around the circular driveway in the front of their home. Pablo always seems to win, leaving his sisters in the dust!
1st Quarter 2008
Along with his very own brother and sister, Pablo has been enjoying the new experience of walking upright in his custom-made wheel cart. Thanks to this cart and a week of unseasonably warm weather, Pablo's adopted mother treated all three siblings to a family picnic. You should have seen the amazement Pablo displayed as he discovered rocks and carried around a stick in his mouth for the very first time! But being the overprotective brother that he is, Pablo made sure to inspect the yard before letting his siblings venture off. He even leads the pack when going on walks now that these three no longer need a stroller to enjoy their daily walks.
4th Quarter 2007
Pablo is very happy, and he almost seems to have a comedic personality. He loves to play and enjoys attention. It's a good thing, too, because he gets plenty of it. Pablo has been working hard in his therapy to strengthen his legs. He enjoys his sessions and loves the pampering. Pablo is a canine celebrity and knows how to milk it for all it's worth. It doesn't hurt that his foster mom is just wild about him, either. Mellow and pleasant, Pablo is a real sweetheart.
3rd Quarter 2007
Finally settling down from all the media hype, Pablo has been able to focus solely on his physical therapy. He really enjoys his harness swing therapy where he's placed in a cloth harness and encouraged to walk on his hind legs. He may be little Pablo now, but soon he'll be buff enough to walk on two legs! He's also been excelling at being a cute, little puppy. He loves to give his foster mom tons of kisses, and he bounces all over the place in happy excitement. As head of the family, Pablo keeps a close eye on his sisters. They are all so close, and it is so clear that they love each other dearly.
2nd Quarter 2007
Pablo has been in the midst of excitement recently. He and his sisters have been featured on several news stations in the U.S. and overseas. An international celebrity, fame has not changed Pablo one bit. He still enjoys the simple things in life like barking at his sisters, snuggling and snacks. We're happy that Pablo is getting so much attention and know that he will continue to dazzle all who meet him.
