Venus joined the League's Sponsor Program in 2007. Venus is one very feisty and terribly adorable Chihuahua. We suspect that she was one of an inbred litter from backyard breeders. Only 10 weeks old when the League rescued her, Venus was born with no front legs. Because of this unfortunate deformity, she will need extensive training to be taught to walk on her back legs. She will also require some type of wheel apparatus to assist her in getting around when she is not relying on her hind legs. |
Venus was named after the ancient Greek sculpture, Venus De Milo. Venus, our lovely, little work of art, has no realization that she is disadvantaged. The smallest of her litter, with brother Pablo and sister Carmen, Venus gets around surprisingly well and seems very happy. She also seems to be adjusting to standing on her back legs the quickest out of all her siblings. Though Venus does not require regular medication, she still has a long road to wellness ahead of her. Until her back legs are strong enough to get her around, life for her will not be easy. However, regardless of her handicap, she is a jolly, healthy dog and we are thrilled to be able to give her all the love and care she deserves.

Venus' Updates
3rd Quarter 2009
Venus has been doing wonderful and her adoptive family has definitely noticed her love for the summer weather. In the yard they have a gated area where Venus, along with Pablo, Carmen and Scooter, can hop, walk and scoot around. Venus seems to enjoy the sunny weather and basks in it for hours. But to avoid getting too hot her adoptive family has set up a small tent so Venus and her siblings can take a rest in the shade if they would like to.
2nd Quarter 2009
Venus and her siblings couldn't be happier with their carefree lifestyle. Their adoptive mother makes sure to keep up with their busy social life and surprisingly Venus doesn't tire of her many play dates. There are quite a few dogs in the neighborhood that Pablo plays with and despite having only two legs, she keeps up with all of them. Venus' adoptive mother says that she is a ball of energy and can be seen running and hopping around in delight. In addition to all the furry friends she has, Venus has also become close with some of the neighborhood children and recently attended yet another birthday party; she spent the entire time "working the room" for attention. Needless to say she was fussed over by all the kids!
1st Quarter 2009
Venus, along with Pablo and Carmen, hasn't been able to exercise outside as much as she used to in her wheel cart since it has been so frigid. Venus truly loved running in the circular driveway in her cart, but the snow makes it a little cumbersome to navigate. However, she does have plenty of space indoors to run around and she loves the many visitors that come over. Venus' adoptive family frequently receives visits from their grandchildren who climb right inside of the gated area where Venus, Carmen and Pablo play. Little Venus loves playing with them and, despite only having two legs, can be caught chasing them around!
4th Quarter 2008
The little trio of Venus, Carmen and Pablo are still maintaining their celebrity status. Venus and her siblings were recently featured in the October issue of National Geographic Kids magazine. All three of these adorable and persevering Chihuahuas were shown in a feature titled "Amazing Animals". And we agree - they sure are amazing! In addition to all the glitz and glamour Venus, Carmen and Pablo have been experiencing they have extremely fulfilling lives at home and enjoy spending time with their family.
3rd Quarter 2008
Venus has been excelling at maneuvering in her wheel-cart and her agility has significantly improved. This is all thanks to her adoptive parents who have developed a specialized titanium wheel cart for Venus, which is lightweight and has smaller wheels. Because Venus is such a little lady she needed the help of a more light-weight wheel cart to allow her to walk around with the same ease as her siblings. Venus is especially happy recently because he adoptive mom is now only working part-time so she can give extra attention to her special little pups at home! You can be sure the Venus tries to steal away any extra time with her foster mom by plopping right in her lap and demanding to be fed separately.
2nd Quarter 2008
Venus has been given some great news for the upcoming month. A new addition to her home is expected – another two legged Chihuahua that's smaller than her! Being that Venus is only 3 lbs. you would never think she'd see the day where she would get to be the big sister, but a tiny pooch will soon be coming to her home. Venus has been training like crazy in her customized wheel-cart so that she can show off for her new teeny adoptive brother. However, Venus shouldn't get used to being the big sister; her new adoptive brother is only 2 months old and will soon grow up to be a strapping Chihuahua with a wheel-cart of his very own.
1st Quarter 2008
Venus has been eager to walk in her new, custom-made wheel cart, but needs to be careful as she has an open skull and is more susceptible to injury. Her new adoptive mother is happy that Venus now has help walking, so her front elbows no longer become chaffed and raw. During the recent picnic Venus experienced, she had quite the sassy attitude she normally has. Nipping at her siblings as they tried to pry away the stick she found. In addition, this little bundle of energy continues to practice with her cart so she can go for walks in the neighborhood with her friends - a St. Bernard and a husky-mix.
4th Quarter 2007
Venus is certainly a little star. She shines, she twinkles and everyone loves to gaze at her. Venus is practically walking on her hind legs now. She is able to take a few steps before taking a little rest. She enjoys her water therapy, and the results are apparent. Venus is so happy and spoiled. Thanks to her generous supporters, even without front legs, she still walks tall and proud and is able to live a very happy life. She can have the intricate medical care she needs and she needn't worry about a thing.
3rd Quarter 2007
Sweet Venus is growing up to be a delicate, little lady. She may be a little more fragile than her siblings because of her soft skull, but she roughhouses like the best of them! The first to start walking on her hind legs, Venus is an example to her brother and sister. She loves bouncing around in the buoyant environment in her water therapy and gets a big kick out of her harness therapy, too. She's having so much fun that she doesn't know it's actually work! But the results are clear – her little legs are growing stronger every day.
2nd Quarter 2007
Venus is dealing with her new found stardom with elegance and tact. Her recent jolt into fame hasn't seemed to taint her at all – she's still the sweetest, cutest little doggie. She loves her siblings dearly and gracefully shares the spotlight without competition. But don't let this little girl fool you – she can put her cute little foot down when she needs to. She may be small, but she's no pushover. We are so happy that so many generous sponsors are making it possible for Venus to get the delicate care she needs and will continue to need. Thank you so much.
